Jerry's Sixth Micro Show (just doesn't seem that long) is just around the corner so thought you may be interested in previewing some of the knives as they are finished. Don Hanson and Pete Crowl will join us this year on October 8-9.
It's just a super, very relaxed knife weekend in the beautiful Arkansas countryside. Well on second thought, not too relaxed untill we finish wrestling over the knives. I also heard something about alligators too.
Jerry decribes his knives. First, A Large South West NLT Bowie:
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc138/10456kja/FiskShow10Clamshell.jpg
This is a large "W" pattern South West style blade. The guard and ferrule are stainless. The handle is an artifact fossil walrus ivory tusk that was used as a fire starter. The streak of brown that you see is where the "stick" slid or cut into the ivory to also make a fire with. This is the only time I have seen both methods to start a fire attemped on the same piece of ivory, that ole boy must have fell in the water or something and was trying any method possible to get a fire going. Where was a zippo when you need one? This is an NLT marked piece. Garden and Gun magazine requested this knife to be sent to them for photographs for the upcoming Dec/Jan issue.
Gamemaster 2nd Generation:
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc138/10456kja/FiskShow10GM2.jpg
This is the second generation Gamemaster hunter. We can just call it the GM-2, that is a lot shorter name. If you look at it and my old Gamemaster hunter handle and the new one you can see that I have put a palm swell on the bottom center. On this particular knife I made the guard thicker than I normally do. The reason of the more guard is that I wanted to use this piece of Dinosaur bone and it was short. This is the first time I have used this material and I like it. I will look for more of it.
This handle design is more comfortable for a longer period of time. I like it. It take 3 more steps to do than the old one but I think you will enjoy using this piece. I have engraved the stainless guard and pins different than I have before. The wolf tooth damascus blade is stamped on the reverse side of the ricasso with the large 30 yr stamp. I have two sizes of the 30 yr mark.
This is the first of the GM-2 models and the first time I have used this material so it will go well in a collection or in the field.

The gold came in for the pin stock for the MOP so I can wind that up this week.

All great images by Chuck Ward!
Classic Sendero:
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc138/10456kja/FiskShow10Sendero.jpg
This is a pattern that I am playing with a bit to see what happens. The handle is Sambar stag with stainless fittings. I did just a touch of engraving on the face of the guard as well as on the side of the guard. Chuck shot it without engraving.
Integral Full Tang Camp Knife:
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc138/10456kja/FiskShow10Integral.jpg
This piece has been forged from W2 round bar that came from the Nickleson File company. The handle material is Desert Iron Wood. I engraved the spine just a bit and with the words, 30 yrs on the spine. A simple looking knife this is no simple matter. This is a knife to be used around the cook from trimming limbs to doing a bit of help with the cook chores. The is a variation of the old Dirk that went to most countries in the world and had much influence. This blade is approx 7 1/2 inches long.

The show is looking good at this point and the Gator run, well, you guys just picture yourself in your own Swamp People episode. lol.
Too bad ole Buddy is not here with him being one handed at the time being. We could put him on the boat and play "Amos Moses". aw, man, that was funny.

They all look great Jerry!
That beaded border on the GM-2 looks like it would be enough to drive you crazy while doing it :). I like the way you sign your engraving -- do you sign all your engraving?
Brian
jerry fisk
09-19-2010, 03:45 AM
Brian, I did not use to sign it but I try to now. Most time it is with a JF that is connected. I sign it not so much for now as the person who buys it knows but more for a historical record after the knives last longer than I do.
I feel that at best I will be an average engraver but that does not stop me from pushing, even if you are average you need to push forward.
I just finished up this evening engraving the Saddle horn folder, I will post it up tomorrow.

Damascus fighter is small, has a 7-3/16" double edged blade and is 12" over all, killer fossil walrus scales and a single gold pin.
Picture really does not show it well:

Very beautiful knives. Jerry, that dirk is just plain amazing. Don, the ivory on that fighter is cool! Can't wait to see and handle these.
I'm very very excited and can hardly wait for the show. But I have still have lots of work to do.
Please excuse the photos. Mr. Ward will work his magic soon.
The Bowie is 15 inch OAL with a desert iron wood burl handle, stainless fittings and a couple copper spacers.
The hunter 9 and 1/4 OAL with a desert iron wood burl handle, stainless fittings and a bronze spacer.
I have a few others very near complete so I'll post them when I can. Hope to show the sheaths also.
Back to the shop.

The blade is 6-3/4" and it is 11-3/4" overall. All of the fittings are Iron and the grip is Elephant Ivory I have carved.
As you know I offer ALT knives numbered 1-10. All of the ALT knives for 2010 have been spoken for. I wanted to make something special for this show,
so I have started what I am calling my Pinnacle Series and I am using the un-numbered ALT stamp that I had reserved for my personal knives made for me.
So this is the first knife of the series. It being a Pinnacle Series the knife is mounted on the stand pictured below.
The knife mounted in the stand I forged out of Iron. It is mounted on a walnut block. I sure enjoyed making this knife and I hope you all like it.
The Pinnacle Series is not to take away from the other ALT numbered knives. It is to give me the opportunity to expand my work to another level of artistic dimension
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r105/10456kaj/JRCookMicro10.jpg
This is a Damascus Composite "W" pattern Modified, South West Bowie. I have been working on the textures and etching of the Damascus.
I think this one turned out very nice. It is an extremely deep etch.
The blade is 10" and it is 15-1/2" overall. The clam shell guard is Damascus from the same steel as is the butt plate.
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r105/10456kaj/JrCookFiskShow.jpg
Here is a Damascus "W" pattern Dagger. I have also forged out a real nice mount for this knife. The handle is Ivory.
There is a lot of work on this one. Another Pinnacle Series stamped ALT. There is a vine etched on the blade.
The Blade is 8" and it is 13-1/4" overall. The grip is Elephant Ivory and the fittings are Iron.
There is a combination of acid engraving and carving on the fittings. Lots of work, but it turned out nice.

http://www.fisk-knives.com/micro-10%20spearptguard2.jpg
This is rare in the fact that MOP in thick scales for handles is getting almost impossible to find. These MOP scales measure a bit over 1/4 inch thich per side. I have put a frame on the handle with front bolsters. I could have put a back bolster on it but I wanted to help mother nature show what she's got as much as possible. I included several other poor quality photos just to show different parts up closer. This one is NLT #8 marked piece. I did a ladder'd W pattern on the steel. Engraving and gold inlays and gold pins. A civilized man should always have a pearl handle knife, that and our ability to accessorize is what seperates us from the lower animals.

don, you are looking good bubba. It should be a good show.
Thanks Kevin, I would love to have some more MOP like that but it just ain't going to happen.
Ok, I know this is not a knife but it does concern the show.
These are part of the targets for the 2010 Atl Atl throw. Bob is making a couple more of them so there is a group of natives chasing a missionary. Points deducted on the throw if you hit the missionary. After we are through throwing at them the game is open folks. Tomahawk throw, or if there is another muzzloader.....you name it. This is saturday afternoon. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to shoot some of that foo foo stuff the wives do? Well here is your chance. I'll tell Bob later what we are doing to them. lol. She has been making them up as targets, then got to wondering about it and so she entered them in the County Fair, they took Best of Show. lol, now I ask you, how cool is that for a target? Yehawwwww. What a guy weekend.!!!

This is an approx 9 1/2 inch blade bowie that has a classic ladder pattern set into it. The handle is Sambar stag with a double sculptured guard and a copper spacer. I did just a touch of engraving on the face of the guard and will leave it up to the buyer if he wants it futher engraved. My personal opinion is that I am just jumping up and down wanting to engrave the guard however it is nice the way it is, so the new owner gets to decide, whomever will be drawn for it. It weighs 11 ounces with the balance being at the leading edge of the ricasso. This one makes you feel like you should be on the walls of the Alamo just waiting for someone to get close.

Well, me thinks I will dust off my old 45 colt then. Anyone else bringing single actions I have plenty of ear plugs to go around. MIne has the old rampant colt grips, unfluted cylinders with 7 1/2 barrel, one of I think 750 made. yehawww

Bob, I had a new in box 2nd gen single action with factory ivory but I just finally sold it to Uncle Al, I just could not stand having it around here and not shooting it so I sold it before I shot it. I traded a Sendero for it when I picked it up. The same guy now wants to trade me a 22cal colt Single but I dont see a need in it.
The 45 I have I just gave like 450 I think it was for it new in box. Been awhile though. lol

This is an upswept Sendero with a frame handle. I do not make many of these at all. An Old Classic pattern with just a touch of new class.
This particular one has a wolf tooth damascus blade with a blade length of approx 4 1/2 inches. The handle is pre-ban elephant ivory with the engraved guard and pins being stainless. I engraved this one a bit different then slightly textured, with a single point chisel I might add, the front and back side of the guard. Stamped on reverse 30 yrs.

If the problem is too much glare from the steel, that can be remedied by dabbing the surface with modeling clay.

This is in the style that you can see many of Texas Ranger pictures from the days when they carried this style a lot. The design is right out of some of the English style bowie patterns that were sent over in large batches to the west. It is a carbon steel blade of approx 7 1/2 inches in length. This piece has a straight stag handle that is rounded off like many of them were and has a scalloped type of guard. They used this style of guard and flat ovals a lot as well as a few other designs , some had ferrules some did not. England produced these by the thousands because they were so functional. They still are today. With the straight design handle you get a lot of speed in the swing. Historical and functional, hummm, sounds like an old girl friend.
Don Hanson

No engraving. 99% of the time I like to do it traditional with these. I have never made one in damascus, they just do not look right. It would be ok with period style engraving but so far I have not done one with it.

http://www.fisk-knives.com/micro-10%20Sendero$8.00
When I first started making knives, I made hunters. They sold for $8.00 each or a matched pair for $15.00. For those of you that are at the show and want to, you can put your marble in the bag and we will draw for it, the winner pays $8.00.
If you just really like this knife you can pay the full price of you want to, thats up to you. The blade is 5160 carbon steel, water quenched with an Desert Iron Wood handle and stainless guard and pins. A good solid design with good solid value.

I could not help myself. I went back and engraved the southern bowie that was posted earlier and not engraved. I thought I would leave it up to the client and just had to engrave it. The reason being is I like to make a knife like I would want myself. Hence it is now engraved.

Kevin, I inlaid a copper "leaf" n the other side in admist the scroll. It is the first time I have did copper, It is different. I probally should have shown that side but I wanted to show the off side of this piece as well. The handle is just outstanding the way it fits in your hand. I cut the stag on this one myself from the horn. It is different looking but it came from the same section of horn. I agree that it looks much better engraved.

I will post a photo up of the sheath as soon as I am done. I have the metal formed and doing the hand sanding on it now. Then dye the leather and put the post on then fit it to the leather. I have not made one of these in years.
I am having to teachmyself to tig weld so I can make them out of stainless. I do not use a filler rod but the sheath metal itself so there is no seam since it is all the same material. I have a friend that took his to his local welding shop for an expert to weld it, the welder ruint it and quick. It is a trick welding .032 thick so teaching myself on a difficult thing to weld to begin with can be a bugger.

I made a "silver throat and tip" for this one out of stainless. It is the first time I have used stainless. It is requiring me to learn how to tig weld and use just the materials available, no filler metal. Believe me, that is a chore. While teaching myself practiceing, my ground was not hooked up well and the shock knocked me off of my stool. Bob had to come help me out of the floor. I tried to choose an old piece of leather to help make it look distressed or something an old Texas Ranger would have carried. I used a sterling concho for the frog button as most of them old rangers only owned what was on their horse so I thought a concho would fit right.
I have already posted up the knife picture that goes into it.

Barry, we do have a good time and learn a bit to boot.
Most years I keep a failure or two then show the guys why it failed etc just so they can learn what to look for. Each year they can cut with whatever large knife I have. This year I have a ladder pattern that I want them to take a look at so they can see what is deep forged in vrs shallow forged in.
I may have an ivory handle'd hunter that we can bust the ivory off of, I will take one more look at it. Things like this is good to know.

Congrats on the decision to go ahead and engrave on the bowie. It certainly lifted it to another level.

Steve, the late batch just went back to their rooms, the early risers will be here in a few hours.
There some knives that are just flat out better looking in person than what the camera was showing. Pete has a little san mai hunter that I am already chasing him around the room asking how he did it. Don's pieces are more impressive than what the photos showed and JR just needs his fingers broke.
We have decided to pull Paul Kessler behind the barge with a rope to see if we can attract gators with him.

Jon, coffee is going, the kitchen is already fixing breakfast and the early guys are about to arrive.
We leave for the gator tour at 9. Oops, the first is just knocking on the door.
On the knives, each of the guys brought some new or very rare things for them. Thats what it is really about.
We have a 30 yrs of forging table set up, there are articles on Chuck Ward as a knife maker, JR cook interviews with folding knives, things you do not see every day. Funny thing was in one of the photos Jon, you are in the background at a show. I found my old show badge from the last show that the ABS did officially at the Tulsa gun show, they moved to the blade show the next year in Knoxville. At that Tulsa show, my ole truck would not have made it that far, so I borrowed my dads flat bed pulpwood truck to drive. We had to park it on an incline and BR Hughes and others had to help me push it to get it started to come back home.
Well, I best get dressed, Maybe one of the guys will acess will post up some.Yall wave bye to Paul, heck, no one likes him anyway and we want his stuff. lol

Jerry, before you do that, could you make sure that Paul has changed his will into leaving all his folders to me. After that you are free to go ahead:D;)
But seriously, I wish you guys lots of fun and I look forward to the report and the pics.

JR and I are taking our large personal bowie knives so we can cut the rope loose when he gets through splashing in the water so much.
Marcel, I will get him to sign a paper, we can fill it out later.

I'm not surprised at all about Don' knives looking better in person!
You've really got me interested in the San-Mai knife of Pete's. Hope to see a photo of it..........
I'm not sure that I am in favor of you using Paul for gator bait. We need to keep the guys who buy knives. You should use an up and coming maker; we don't need the competition. HI PETE!!!!

Well today was interesting.
I will let the boys explain it all later with pictures etc but I guess I can say the game warden did bring the gator by in the truck so we could all take a look at him close up, next thing you know, the gamewarden has a bandaged hand and the gator is loose in the yard, hits the woods and was not seen for several hours. Last time it was seen was when it stopped trafic on the highway as it scooted across the road into the pond across the street. Now if some of yall remember I shot a knife into that same pond last year, so what we figure is there is the aligator sheath for the knife.

Absolutely the best time I've ever had at a knife show! By far!
This is saying a lot, because I've had some really great times at shows over the years.
The food and company were out of this world. No words to describe! I have new friends and a larger belly. :D
I didn't take any pics, but lots of others did, hopefully they'll post em up soon.
If any of you ever get a chance to go to Jerry's, you must go!
Jerry and folks, thank you very much for having me there.

I really look forward to seeing all the friends in October. For many, it's the only time we get together all year. Then there's the new friends we make over the weekend.
A big Thanks to the Fisk Ladies (including Bob who will officially be a Fisk Lady in a couple weeks).:) They did an excellent job in helping Jerry get it ALL together. Their food was out of this world.
Darby Neaves did the Catfish fry and Jambalaya on Friday night which was finger-licking GOOD. But Darb, don't let part of dinner get away next time. ;) :D
Great time, great food, great knives.
I will do a show review after I get CKCA business tightened up.
Our 2011 calendars went on sale today, by the way.

THANKS Steve, I appreciate your vote for gator bait
Pete; Ol' Buddy!!! You're too nice a guy to use for bait, so I knew Jerry wouldn't feed you to the gators. Congratulations to you for being one of the stars of Jerry's event. An honor, I'm sure.
Can't wait to see some pictures from the show. Anyone seen the escapee gator lately?

The show was a good one. I want to thank each of the collectors that was there for adding to the good time and for making me laugh so hard.
I also want to thank Don, Pete and JR for bringing their "A" game to the show.
The Micro show that we do is based on friendships. That was my intention all along, not to create sales, I can do that at other shows, but I know of no show that binds together people the way we try to do here. It is nice when you have the guys check on each others health and well being during the year not because they may buy and trade with each other during the year but because of the friendships they have formed. I am proud to be a part of this group.
