The 2010 Blade Show in Atlanta will be the site for the ABS Knife Auction on Saturday June 5th at 10:00am in Room 103. One of the most important fund raising events for the ABS is the Knife Auction in Atlanta each year. Our members spend many long hours of skilled labor crafting these knives and then donate them to the auction.

One of those outstanding knives is the TOMB Knife of the Year by Master Smith Joe Keeslar for 2010.

The model is a "Paradox Series of my Brut de Forge" in a Southwestern style Bowie. It was forged from a French file with a blade length of 11 inches and has an O.A.L. of 16 1/4 inches. It is handled in curly maple with sterling silver dogwood flower and sterling silver scroll pattern wire inlay on the left slab handle, and on the right slab handle the tomb stone and year 2010 are in sterling silver and the TOMB is in gold wire.

The top of the blade and the pommel end of the tang have decorative file work and are engraved with my "Vine" pattern. The bolsters are of 416 stainless steel and are engraved with a "fish scale" motiff. The sheath is of the southwestern period, tooled with a simple border pattern and I have added a Texas Star concho. The letters TOMB and the date 2010 are stamped into the leather then high lighted with gold paint.

Another outstanding knife is the 2010 Mastersmith Knife of the Year by Master Smith Mike Williams.

The 2010 Master Smith Knife of the year with a double ladder pattern Damascus blade and a Sheffield clip will be up for bid at the ABS auction in Atlanta at the 2010 Blade Show on June 5th at 10:00am. This outstanding Collector's piece has a fossilized Walrus ivory handle and all fittings are blued. The butt cap has an ivory inlay that has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Chuck Ward took the photo below that shows the detail in the butt cap.

2010 ABS Board of Directors Knife – Made by members of the ABS Board of Directors including Joe Keeslar, Greg Neely, Jim Batson, Harvey Dean, Rick Dunkerley, Jay Hendrickson, and Steve Dunn. It is an interpretation of an antique bowie knife by Slater Bros. of Sheffield (pictured on p.110 of The Bowie Knife, Unsheathing an American Legend by Norm Flayderman.) This knife features a saber ground 13-1/4 inch clip point blade of 5160 steel, a frame style handle of African blackwood, stainless steel trim, decorative engraving, and a nickel silver mounted leather sheath.

Journeyman Smith Brian Thie put a lot of hard work and effort into the 2010 Journeyman Smith Knife of the year and the detail really shows in both the knife and the sheath that will be on auction. The blade is 12 1/4" long with a hand rubbed finish. The guard and butt cap are made of twist Damascus forged from 15N20 and 1080 steel. The finial is stainless steel. The spacer between the handle and guard is sterling silver. The handle is desert ironwood and the sheath is an inlay overlay type with ostrich being the inlay.

2010 Masters Collaboration Knife - Another outstanding knife available at the ABS auction in Atlanta this year is the 2010 Masters Collaboration Knife by Master Smiths: Rodrigo Sfreddo, Brion Tomberlin, and Lin Rhea. The blade and fitting material is a 7 twisted bar composite. Welded, ground, heat treated, and finished by Rodrigo Sfreddo. The guard shape and fit as well as initial fit up of ferule is by Brion Tomberlin. The final fitting shaping, etching, finish of Walrus Ivory, and assemblage is by Lin Rhea. The Photo is by Chuck Ward Photography.

Blade: 10 inches
Fittings: Composite Damascus and Stainless
Handle: Fossil Walrus Ivory
OAL: 15 inches

I saw this one on display at Little Rock and it is a truly impressive piece. As are the MS and JS auction knives by Mike Williams and Brina Thie, respectively. All should inspire active bidding.

Thank you Lin, and also Rodrigo and Brion for the outstanding work and your support of the ABS! The photo by Chuck Ward really shows off the features of this exceptional knife. It should be a very sought after knife at the ABS Auction on Saturday at 10:00am in Atlanta.

Dan,

I absolutely love the TOMB knife, as I do all work by Joe. What's the significance of this acronym? Or is there?

Thanks,

Coop
