Well, the Arkansas show is less than a month away. All tables are sold with a waiting list started, so it looks like a full slate of makers will attend. The "Best of Show" knife will be chosen Friday night at the Gala, by the Knifemakers themselves. This will be a chance to view each makers best knife, all on one table.
This year Terry Vandeventer and Brion Tomberlin collaborated on a beautiful bowie that will be auctioned via silent auction. Bidding will end at 3:00 PM Sunday. Also, you don't have to attend the show to bid. David Etchieson has agreed to take bids via telephone. His phone number is 501-554-2582. Here is an image of that Bowie.

Also we have four donated knives this year made by Sam Butler, Kyle Royer, Rusty McDonald, and Ralph Richards.
When someone buys a knife at the show the maker will fill out a ticket for the buyer to drop in a box. At 3:00 PM Sunday four tickets will be drawn from the box and the lucky ticket holder will receive one of these fine knives. Here are images of these fine knives.

Great images of some terrific knives - and kudos to the makers who have donated / collaborated on these pieces.

I'm loving that Tomberlin / Vandeventner bowie.

Wow! The quality of those auction/drawing blades speaks well of the AKA Show and membership. It's always been one of my favorite annual shows and I'm looking forward to it again this year.

To: Tableholders

Arkansas Custom Knife Show

The show will be held February 20-21, 2010 in the Robinson Center Exhibit Hall located at the corner of Markham and Broadway (424 West Markham) in downtown Little Rock. It is adjacent to the DoubleTree Hotel which is the host hotel for the show. The DoubleTree’s phone numbers are: local (501) 372-4371, toll free (800) 937-2789. A block of rooms have been reserved for the show. Reserve your room by February 1st to get the show rate of $112 for single/double, $122 triple or $132 quad. Ask for the Arkansas Knifemakers block of rooms and the show rate. You may reserve online by going to www.doubletreelr.com or www.littlerock.doubletree.com and enter AKM for the group code.

Registration

The table packets will be available in the hotel lobby Friday evening, at the reception table in the hotel ballroom Friday night or at the registration table early Saturday morning in the exhibit hall. Set up can begin as early as 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Suppliers can unload behind the building at the rear of the exhibit hall. Name badges will be printed. Email aka@alliancecable.net with the name of each person that will be at your table.

Friday Night Reception

There will be a reception Friday night in the DoubleTree Ballroom on the second floor. Each table holder will have two tickets at the reception entrance. Extra tickets are $20 each. This is planned as an opportunity for makers to invite their clients and collectors to mingle and have a good time. A cash bar will open at 6:30 p.m. Food will be served at 7:00 p.m. Each maker is encouraged to bring their best knife for display and from this display the “Best of Show” award will be chosen by the makers in attendance. We also hope to premiere a video about knives & knife making in Arkansas featuring several “stars” familiar to this group. Video and interviews with Bill Worthen, B.R. Hughes, Jim Batson, Marilyn Lile Miller, A.G. & Goldie Russell, James Stewart (Lile’s engraver), Bob Dozier and Jerry Fisk are included. A knife from each of the 16 Arkansas Master Smiths will be featured.

Security

Security will be provided in the room both days during the show and all night Saturday night.

Parking

Free parking is available to hotel guests in the city owned parking deck located beneath the DoubleTree. Doors lead directly from the deck into the exhibit hall. This is the best location to park even if not a hotel guest. The small parking fee is worth the convenience.

Auction Knives

The Arkansas Knifemakers Association will have a silent auction of a club knife and other donated knives or nice knife related items donated by makers on a table near the front entrance. The main auction knife is a Bowie made and donated by Master Bladesmiths Terry Vandeventer and Brion Tomberlin. We would greatly appreciate other donations for the auction. Proceeds benefit the AKA and the show. Pictures of donated knives are sent to the knife publications. Many members and tableholders in past years have donated smaller or less valuable items for door prizes. Please consider doing so again for this show. We will have a drawing for tableholders only on Sunday morning to give away various items donated by the suppliers and tableholders. This is a popular way to show our appreciation to the tableholders for attending the show and making it such a success.

Give Away Knives

Give away knives were made and donated by Sam Butler, Kyle Royer, Rusty McDonald and Ralph “Bud” Richards. They will be given away at 3:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon of the show. These knives will be displayed near the front of the room during the show along with a sign that states that each person that buys a knife at the show will receive a card from the seller to fill out for a drawing at the end of the show. Each person that buys a knife will have a chance to win one of these knives. We would appreciate donations of additional knives for this purpose. It very well could improve sales.

Awards

We will have awards for several “Best” categories.

“Best Hunter” – sponsored by the Arkansas Game & Fish Foundation

“Best Fighter” – sponsored by Texarkana College

“Best Folder” – sponsored by NeTex Printing, Texarkana, TX

“Best Art Knife” – sponsored by TOMB

“Best Pearl Knife” – sponsored by Culpepper & Co., Inc.

“Best Sheath” – sponsored by Arkansas Knifemakers Association

“Best Giraffebone Handle” – sponsored by Giraffebone, Inc.

“Best Historically Inspired Knife” – sponsored by Chuck Ward Photography

The “Best Pearl Knife” award will be given for the best use of pearl in a knife.

The “Best Historically Inspired Knife” award will be given for the best reproduction of any historical or early style knife.

Photography

Chuck Ward will be taking digital photographs of all auction and award winning knives. He will be set up both days in the same room (103) as last year to the right of the hospitality room and will be available to take photos of any and all knives for a reasonable fee. Photos of auction and award winning knives will be sent to the major knife publications, Knives Annual and will be posted on the AKA website.

Hospitality Room

We will have our usual hospitality room in the same location as last year with coffee, water, soft drinks, cookies and pastries. ]The room is limited to use by members and tableholders and their guests and clients[/SIZE]. This room is very nice and convenient for members and tableholders but is also very expensive to keep stocked. A donation box will be available to help offset some of the cost. Sandwiches and salads will be available in the show room at lunchtime both days prepared by the DoubleTree Hotel catering dept.

VIP Passes

Five VIP and fifteen show passes are included in this mailing. Give the VIP passes to your best customers and the show passes to the rest of your clients. VIP passes can enter the show room at 8:30 a.m. each day. Makers expecting a VIP should be in the room by that time also.
