Vigilante Bowie Blade by Bruce Bump, handle design and construction by Steven Janik and future engraving by Doug Sutherland.

I start with a 3x6x1 block of 1018. Somewhere in there is a fully integral subhilt frame waiting to come out.

Here is the initial plunge to remove the material where the scales will go. This is manual machining and I'm using the table stops to hog out the material.

I mill a .250 relief through one corner of the cutout. This allows me to square up the line in front of the trigger as well as give some coolant and chip relief.

Roughed out on one side and compared to the drawing.

Cutout drawing overlaid on block just to keep my frame of reference.

cThe face of the guard is milled at the proper angle after the remaining holes are bored to create the guard and pommel radius.

After bring the part back to center I layout and center drill for three holes that will create the tang slot.

I mill the tang slot with a .187 end mill just past the depth of the back of the guard.

The block is reset flat in the vise and two lineal cuts are made to create the "v" shaped tang slot. The mill is turned a few degrees on its base to accomplish this shape.

The shoulder on the blade has already been created and the file guard is still attached as the blade is fitted into the slot and up against the guard face.

After some weight reduction and balance it's off to the bandsaw to profile the handle. Pin holes for the liners and scales have been laid out and drilled and tapped.

.030 Stainless liners are cut and fit. the edge of the liners will get some treatment that will compliment the engraving.

Once again the blade is slid in to the profiled frame to get an overall feel for the whole piece.

I start the rough contouring here. Note the blue dye against the front and back of bolster area, this has the domed shape of the scale material scribed into it. This way I can maintain my full scale thickness while freehand contouring the frame.
