The Challenge

The CKCA - Jerry Fisk Cutlery Challenge is an opportunity for CKCA members who are full-time knife makers, (forge and/or
do stock removal) to be awarded an endowment of $15,000 for creating the most innovative knife they have ever done.
Out of all the submissions, three recipients will be chosen and can use the money however they choose – as long as it
related to making a knife which is more innovative. For example, the money could be used for training/travel for
engraving/carving or for the purchase of needed equipment. It could be the innovation of a new process – a new design –
anything which produces a knife more innovative than what is currently being done. Makers are required to keep
records/receipts detailing how their endowment was spent and these records are subject to inspection by the CKCA. Each
recipient must agree to be photographed and/or filmed during the year they are working on their knife – and must promise
to disclose any methods that they used at the end of the program. ALL WORK MUST BE DONE BY THE MAKERS
THEMSELVES – ABSOLUTELY NO OUTSOURCING. Those methods and videos will be available for viewing upon
presentation of their pieces for judging at the Blade Show in Atlanta. After judging is complete, the information will be
available for educating other makers.

The benefactor of the program has claimed the “right to purchase” any or all of the submitted knives at a price agreed
upon by he and the maker. Any knives not purchased by the benefactor may be sold by the makers to whomever they
choose after they are judged and the project is completed. All money received from the sales go to the makers. CKCA is
not responsible for selling the knives nor will they receive any money from the sales. (CKCA reserves the right to have the
knives displayed for a period of time in a museum (yet to be determined) in order to further promote custom knife making in
the art field). Each recipient will be responsible for paying taxes on these funds and will receive a 1099 at the end of the
year for tax reporting purposes.

Here are our Project Milestones:

May 1, 2012 - All applications have to be in to the CKCA for consideration.

June 7, 2012 - Three CKCA member knifemakers will be chosen for each to receive a $15,000.00 endowment to create their Knife Innovation Project. Winners will be announced and checks awarded at the annual CKCA Banquet/Meeting/Mini Knife Show on Thursday night before Blade Show.

July 7, 2012 - Date by which the three winning knifemakers will give the CKCA an idea of the direction they are going in creating their Knife Innovation Project. You are not committing to an idea or design but more running your ideas, concept and preferably drawings past us for acceptance and/or guidance.

April 15, 2013 - Date that all three Knife Innovation Projects are to be 100% completed and due to our designated CKCA photographer for photography and promo materials.

Blade Show June 2013 - The winning Knife Innovation Project will be selected by our distinguished panel of judges and winning knifemaker will be introduced and celebrated as the 2013 CKCA-Jerry Fisk Cutlery Challenge Winner.

We are opening this up to include all CKCA maker members not just full time.

There are so many excellent part time makers that bust their humps to be creative they deserve a run at this as well.
I wish all of you the best of luck.

This is BIG. This is pushing the envelope. The generous benefactor (with Jerry Fisk's help and CKCA's administrative support) has managed to open up new territory in the custom knife world. I just can't say enough good things about it.

I am very much in favor of this decision. There are a lot of talented makers who are "part time".

If the goal of this Challenge is to find the most innovatively talented makers, it would be a shame to shoot the project in the foot by placing limits on who can apply.

This is very exciting, maybe one of the biggest things to happen in custom knives since Bill brought back damascus. I can't wait to see what new things come out of it. Just too cool.

We complected accepting applications for the CKCA-Jerry Fisk Cutlery Challenge Tuesday May 1st at 12-midnight est.

On behalf of Jerry Fisk and the CKCA, I would like to sincerely thank each knifemaker who sent in an application. Many of these were extremely detailed requiring significant thought and effort in completing.

Now our selection panel will spend probably the next 30 days going over the applications in detail to select our 3 knifemakers to participate in this worthwhile project. These 3 knifemakers will be named at our CKCA Banquet on Thursday night June 7 in Atlanta.

$45,000 was given away for the first time by the Custom Knife Collectors Association Thursday, June 7th at their annual banquet during the world’s largest custom knife show held in Atlanta, Georgia. The money was awarded to three custom makers chosen to represent the knife industry as they move forward into other artistic fields.

The selected applicants of the Challenge announced at the CKCA banquet will represent and elevate the artistic value and collectability of the custom made knife. These makers embody a diverse set of custom designs which could fit into any art collection whether contemporary, modern, or abstract. Their innovative skills will elevate the cutlery industry into a higher level in the world of collectable art.

HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN A MERE TWO YEARS OF FULL TIME KNIFEMAKING ARE TRULY INSPIRING. PRESENTING : ELIZABETH LOERCHNER

The panel that selected these makers are knowledgeable knife enthusiasts. They had to review a variety of makers from seven different countries, making the decision even more difficult. They looked at applications from – both stock removal and forgers -; both domestic and foreign -; both young and old-; both male and female -; and made every possible effort to offer diversity with their final selection, rather than choosing people with the same style.

We would like to thank all who participted in this challenge. As I understand it who to pick was really difficult as their was some excellent people to chose from.

We encourage each of you to leave your application in for next year and even work to get other makers to sign up. This will be good for our entire industry no matter who was chosen. Remember next year, the judges will be walking the bladeshow floor to see what all of the show members are doing, so they could be stopping at your table as a result of this challenge.

Bob, like you, I was impressed that they got such a wide spread of the types of work out there in our field with their choices. Just about anything you might be looking for would be made by one of this group somehow.
Once again, my thanks to the judging committee for their work and for their wisdom.

I would also like to thank the judges and committee for giving me the opportunity to work on this new project. I am excited and wanting to get started. I have been working on the design of my project knife and have found another innovative handle construction that, opps, I can’t tell that can I? This is such a great project and it is going to be hard not to talk about it to anyone.
Thanks to all of you for your support and to you Jerry for offering this to the knife industry
