J.R. Cook will have this one on his table in Little Rock, as well as the dagger at the top of the thread. Both are worth checking out live at the show. This beauty is his 25 Years (of knifemaking) anniversary knife - the Swallowtail Bowie. If you do behold it at the show, tell me if that isn't some of the most perfect feather damascus steel you've ever seen (both sides). Look how it translates to the guard and other fittings. That's fossil walrus ivory the color of butterscotch. The word swallowtail, in this instance, refers to JR's unique split ends on the guard. 12 1/2 in. OAL

Jerry Fisk will have this sole authorship piece at the show and after spending a few days with it in my studio, I'd suggest you check it out in person if you can. It's a great example of his work and part of his National Living Treasure series of handmade knives. This one is designated NLT#9 '10.

The mammoth ivory handle slabs may not be the most beautiful of all time but, IMHO, they are the most beautiful i've ever seen! Absolutely incredible.

There's more to admire in this particular Fisk creation and for me the blade really stands out. It's an 8 1/4 in. forged damascus blade (OAL is 13 in.) in the rare antique bowie style found in examples by Samuel Bell. That is to say it has a sharp top edge that is chisel ground. Per Jerry, "It's the only type of top edge that will reliably cut a 1 in rope."

It took a lot of control to forge and finish this excellent blade. The perfect full length taper, the junction between the blade spine and the scoop start of the chisel grind, and then finally the transition from the chisel grind to the convex spear tip - perfect execution of all three is critical to the success of this blade and it would be so easy to screw up. Jerry's blade is flawless.

We often marvel at the high level of technical competence visible in the custom knife world today and Jerry is no exception. What I see (and feel) in this blade is technical competence, plus confidence - a lot of hard-won self-confidence. I told Jerry that a bunch of his collectors will be weeping when they see this one fly away. :(

Kevin Jones
01-28-2011, 03:57 PM
Don, that's such an elegant and beautiful little knife in such a handy little carry size.
Both you and Jerry are really working to offer your collectors a variety of designs as represented by this piece, the hunter from Jerry's show and your new double-edge fighter designs.

Looking forward to seeing the rest!

Kevin Jones

The Fisk screams "Fisk Excellence" and I believe most will agree that Buddy is on fire with his photography.

Cutting 1" hanging rope is impressive, but cutting it with the clip?

Here are some I'll have on the table in Little Rock, beginning with one Buddy Thomason just shot for me.

All of these will have the famous PAUL LONG Sheaths!

The blade is an 8 3/4 inch, 4-bar Damascus, with each final bar a "W cored" 9 bar. The fittings are 2-bar "W" Damascus , and the handle ancient Walrus. The Knife's a "Take-down," and the take-down tool holds spare pins.

http://www.fototime.com/DFE9FD2AAFA5B62/orig.jpg

I'll also bring three W-2 hamon blades.

Here's an 11 inch Stag-handled Bowie/Fighter

A 7 1/2 inch Desert Ironwood Camp Knife

http://i257.photobucket.com/albums/hh209/blackdog43_2008/7798f393.jpg

and here's a 10 inch Mammoth Ivory handled Bowie/Fighter, that isn't yet polished. I'll be polishing the hamon at the Havana, FL Hammer-In next Saturday.

Hi everyone!

Here is a knife I'll have on display at the Little Rock, AR show next week. I'll have two or three more at the show as well, however this will be the most elaborate one I'll have.

The 11" blade has a mosaic core and modified "W" twist bars on the outside. The blade is up-swept with a long clip. The handle is walrus ivory. I made the fittings out of A-36 and gun blued them. I also added some fine silver inlay. The file-worked liners are of titanium as is the inset in the pommel. This is also the first knife I've made with a Spanish Notch.

I would like to thank Caleb for the great work he did on the pic.

I'm looking forward to the show!

This is my second Generation Gamemaster. The blade has a Dog star pattern damascus and is approx 5 inches long, the handle is stag with the stainless mountings being engraved. I did sign the engraving but you will need to find were, just having my little fun, folks. On the spine right ahead of the ricasso I have inlaid a 24kt gold oval in case some one wants to put a name. The handle is held on with "Hat Pins"

I should have a few hunters for you to see at this show too.

These have 4 1/4 inch blades, one is 1084, the other is my combination of 1084 and 15N20. Both have stainless and Amber Stag.

Very good looking and functional hunters Lin. Beautiful stag.

At first glance I thought you had found a way to have damascus on one side of the blade and carbon steel on the other. ;) :D

Great knives,

Hanson, Rhea, Buxton, Newton and Tomberlin!

Here is another knife I'll have at the show. It's an integral with a 6" gun blued blade with hamon. The handle is blackwood and the fittings are radial pattern damascus. The blued blade was very hard to photograph on this knife because it is very black and shiny. I think Caleb did good on it, however you should see it in person. I am making an auto also, however I won’t have time to get a picture of it.

I’ll see you all this weekend, Kyle

And what a Bowie it is.
1095 carbon blade, walrus tusk, pure silver wire, 24k Horrigan M.S titanium spacers. 16 inches overall. Sole authorship.
John's made some outstanding Bowies and this has got to be amount the best imo.

I thought it was a good show. Wow, the body count coming through the door was staggering and that was amazing considering we had the horse races this weekend, a gun show in town as well as another large event.

Just a terrific show in every respect. I never have anything but a great time in Little Rock, and this was no exception.

For those who would like to see some show pics, I have a gallery set up here:

http://www.fototime.com/inv/65DCC10F1CFFC10

It needs some editing, organizing and some captions, but the pics mostly are self-explanatory.

I have posted a show review on another forum, but there are so many pics that it would blow my monthly bandwidth to replicate it here. I will eventually copy it here so that it can serve as a reference for those contemplating going to the show down the road and wanting to know what it is like.

It certainly was nice seeing everyone.
As Jerry stated, it seemed VERY busy all day Saturday and was steady on
Sunday.
Great knives and great folks an unbeatable combination.
